Study Aids and Strategies Assessors
help disabled students identify equipment and
support they can use to participate in higher education to the best of
their ability.
They provide advice to Local Education Authorities on
how to allocate funding from the Disabled Students Allowances to cover
the cost of specialist equipment and support. They provide advice and
guidance to the higher education institution on reasonable adjustments
they can make to ensure the student is able to participate in the
course.
'Disabilities' includes:
- Sensory disability: deaf or hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted.
- Specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, brain injury
- Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Motor Neurone Disease, etc
- Acquired mobility / dexterity problems e.g. through injury, amputation, disease. Arthritis, Osteoporosis
- AutoImmune Disorders including HIV.
- Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassemia
- Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizophrenia
- Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder
- Chronic medical conditions, including heart disease, respiratory disorders, diabetes
- Epilepsy and other neurological disorders
- Cancer, including people recovering from intensive chemotherapy or other treatment.
- Other chronic medical conditions.
