Association of Study Aids/Strategies Assessors.

This page provides links to information for disabled students in UK higher education about  funding they can access to pay for equipment and support.

If you are studying for an undergraduate degree, HND, Foundation degree, Extended degree, PGCE, Open University Degree, MA or MSc you may be eligible for support from the Disabled Students Allowances. The arrangements for providing support from the DSA are currently changing, but you should contact your Local Authority for advice. Use this link to download information about the Disabled Students Allowances (in a PDF document).
All students entering higher Education in 2008 should liaise with their local authorities about DSA issues.

Student Finance England will process all applications for students in England wishing to enter HE in 2009/10. This does not affect students in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

If you are funded through the NHS for your course, refer to the NHS Student Bursaries site for information about how they administer the DSA.

If you are studying, or thinking of studying, with the Open University, refer to the section of their site that provides information about the DSA for disabled students at the OU.

If you are studying for a postgraduate degree or PhD, you may be eligible for funding through your research council. Contact your research council for advice. The university of Warwick maintains a useful page with links to the various research councils for people applying for DSA.

If you have additional support costs that cannot be met from the DSA, you might be eligible for help from the Access To Learning Funding at your university, and/or from the Snowdon Award Scheme.

If you have a disability, you might not realise you are also eligible to receive benefits to help cover daily living costs while studying.  Your local DIAL network centre should be able to offer advice and support on applying for disability benefits.

If you still need help, the disability officer at your university should be able to offer up-to-date advice on the range of benefits and funding you might be entitled to. Also, student welfare/finance advisors can provide up-to-date information and advice.
